- 1). Turn off all power to the room where you are working, flipping the switch at the breaker box.
- 2). Bring new 12-gauge wire from a breaker panel or attach the wire to an existing light fixture nearby.
- 3). Screw the cans from the light kit onto a stud or solid joist with a screwdriver, allowing ½ inch for finishing drywall.
- 4). Pull new wire from the electric breaker panel to where the recessed lights are to begin.
- 5). Drill holes in the studs or joist just large enough for the wiring to be pulled through above the cans. Allow yourself 8 inches of extra wire at each can's junction box.
- 6). Cut the wire at the can, using a wire cutter. Strip back 2 inches of the outer insulation and reveal the wires inside, using the wire stripper. Strip 1/2 inch of plastic from each of these wires.
- 7). Connect each wire to wires in the can's junction box, black to black and white to white with a wire nut (also called a wire connector). The ground wires, which are either bare copper or green plastic coated, will also be connected with a wire nut.
- 8). Install the bulb recommended by the manufacturer.
- 9). Connect all the wires at the next can's junction.
