- 1). Find your basic style. Flip through furniture catalogs or design magazines for ideas. Visit furniture stores. If you find yourself attracted to rooms with natural wood and hand-crafted pieces, your tastes may run more traditional. If bright colors and a minimalist look are more appealing, you will probably be happier with a more modern design. If you like a little of each, go eclectic. This style allows you combine different styles and time periods to create a one-of-a-kind look. Go with the style that makes you feel comfortable and at home.
- 2). Choose the bed that matches your style. The bed is the centerpiece of the bedroom. It defines how the room feels and looks. If your style is traditional, consider a dark wood canopy bed or a sleigh bed. For a more modern look, consider the spare, clean look of a platform bed.
- 3). Select your color scheme. Choose colors that make you feel good and help you relax. Soft blues and greens can have a calming and tranquil effect. Shades of pink and lilac can be soothing and warm. For a more dramatic, sophisticated look, explore strong, deeper tones of sage and aubergine, deep turquoise or chocolate brown. Set off darker tones with bright, white bed linens. Natural, neutral shades can create a relaxing mood. Brighten up a neutral room with colorful curtains, bed linens or throw pillows. Bright pinks and other hot colors have their place in the bedroom, too. Consider toning down these brighter hues with complementary shades of brown or other neutrals.
- 4). Shop for window coverings and bedding that incorporates and complements your color scheme. If you already have a comforter you love, this could be the starting point for creating your color scheme.
- 5). Complete your bedroom with furniture pieces such as an armoire, dresser or an end table. Incorporate pieces you already own and consider how you will be using your room. A large walk-in closet may eliminate the need for a dresser. You may prefer one nightstand for reading or you may be happier with two, one on each side of the bed. These furniture pieces do not need to match your bed, but they should complement it.
