Pacific Grove, CA: Dentist Can Be Ally In Diabetes Detection: View From A Private Duty Caregiver Serving, Carmel, Carmel Valley, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Gilroy, Gonzalez, Greenfield, Hollister, King City, Marina, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Salinas, San Juan Bautista, Seaside & Soledad CaliforniaWho ever thought your dentist could be a friend in fighting diabetes? I wrote a blog in June about this terrible disease that two government-funded surveys are being conducted, hoping to find a way to prevent the disease. Doctors conducting the projects are hoping to delay the disease, either temporarily or indefinitely. I had written on my blog the day prior about a man who received a medal for being the first American to live with the disease for 85 years. However, his story is rare. Most 90 year olds don't have the fortitude to check their blood sugar up to a dozen times per day, give themselves the proper shots of insulin and watch their diet and exercise regimen so closely. For most seniors struggling with the disease, it can be very depressing and once their memories start to fade, there can be terrible consequences, sometimes fatal, if diet and blood sugar levels aren't monitored properly. The latest research on the topic came from a new study in the Journal of Dental Research which found that looking at peoples teeth and then doing a fasting blood-glucose test was a good way to diagnose the disease. Between 2009 and 2010, researchers screened 601 new patients at a Manhattan dental clinic, none of which had ever been told they had diabetes or prediabetes. However, most had at least one risk factor such as hypertension or obesity. 506 patients were given blood glucose tests and it was found that 21 were potentially diabetic and another 164 were prediabetic. Deep crevices or pockets around the teeth can be signs of diabetes. So eat right, get your exercise, and don't forget to go to your dentist. http://www.familyinhomecaregiving.com/blog/index.html?entry=monterey-ca-diabetes-someday-annihilatedhttp://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111904140604576496321479550218.html
About Richard Kuehn & Family inHome Caregiving of Monterey:
After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member I was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies.
