Pebble Beach, CA: Monterey Judge Gives Elder Abuser 35 Years In Prison: View From A Private Duty Caregiver Serving Carmel, Carmel Valley, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Gilroy, Gonzalez, Greenfield, Hollister, King City, Marina, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Salinas, Sand City, San Juan Bautista, Seaside And Soledad California
Under California's three strikes and you're out law, a repeat elder-abuser from Sand City, California was sentenced to 35 years in prison in Monterey Superior Court after receiving a 25-year sentence in Texas courts for similar crimes. The man was convicted of stealing more than $100,000 from local senior citizens who were under the impression they were paying for home repairs. "You're a predator. I don't know if anybody's ever said that to you," said Judge Russell Scott at the sentencing. "Here you are preying on the elderly...and you don't care," he said. The man convinced nine people, some of them in their 80's to pay him in advance for painting, roofing, window replacement and other repairs. A maintenance worker at the Pine Inn took out an equity line on his home for $65,000 and turned over $50,000 to the man. He sued and was repaid, although his case was rare. The abuser skipped town in 2007 but couldn't resist preying on the elderly in Monterey and was back in 2008 to victimize six more people, including a 69-year old from Carmel who lost almost $14,000 which was paid to the man to put a new roof and paint on her house. My grandmother used to live in an over-55 community in Santa Rosa, and people would often try and prey on residents. For instance, they would knock on their door and ask if they would like their gutters cleaned. The senior citizens often wouldn't ask how much this would cost. After the work was completed, they were threateningly asked for 10 or 20 times what the repair or cleaning should have cost. Living alone, many seniors would be frightened and turn over the money, and many would be too ashamed to call the police. If you need work done on your home, never hire someone who arrives unannounced on your doorstep. Reputable companies don't show up unannounced. The best way to find help is to ask friends or neighbors. Finding a good reference is much better than picking someone out of the yellow pages. If you're getting something expensive done like a re-roofing, always get multiple bids. You would be surprised at the difference in price when you get multiple bids. Let's stop people like this from preying on the elderly.
