- 1). Prime the pistol to make sure it will discharge in the field. Snap the hammer on percussion caps on each of the shot nipples of the revolver to make sure they are completely dry. Once this is done, you may load the black powder and patched ammunition balls.
- 2). Hunt in an area that is fairly thick in ground cover. Wide-open spaces will not work to your advantage when hunting with a cap and ball revolver. Getting in close is crucial to making a successful clean kill because of the slower ballistics and shortened range of this type of primitive weapon.
- 3). Place attractive scents in order to lure game to your shooting area. In the case of deer hunting, female estrous scent is a way not only of covering up your scent, but also of attracting buck activity into your immediate surroundings.
- 4). Cut shooting lanes in the area you are hunting. Even though cap and ball revolvers fire heavy rounds that carry through brush well, too much obstruction can lead to missed shot opportunities or possible deflection. Remember not to cut down so much undergrowth that it compromises your cover, however.
- 5). Create a natural blind by taking the freshly cut undergrowth and sticking the sharpened end of branches into the ground. You should also take advantage of naturally rolling terrain as well as rocks and trees for your concealment.
- 6). Use a call appropriate to the game you are hunting to attract the animals closer. A deer grunt call works well for whitetail deer. A box turkey call is effective for turkey.
