According to Annenberg Media, in the United States, each person creates almost 5 pounds of trash every day. This includes glass, plastic, metal, paper, and rubber that could be recycled. Instead, the majority of waste ends up in landfills. Instead of throwing these materials out, you can recycle them into wonderful projects. By doing so, you will protect our natural resources and prevent various types of pollution due to modern methods of disposal that include burying, dumping or burning. - You can often use recycled material in the garden. If you want to start plants outdoors early or keep them growing late in the season, build a simple cold frame. All it takes is a bit of lumber (preferably used and not pressure treated) and old glass windows or doors. Form a rectangular frame with the wood. Make the back slightly higher than the front. The size of your structure is determined by the size of your glass. Lay the frame on the ground in a protected area with a southern exposure and place the glass on top. Put hinges on the back, attaching the window's or door's frame to the box. With this box you will be able to grow cool-loving vegetable such as lettuces and greens. If it gets too hot inside, prop up two of the corners with sticks or small pieces of scrap lumber.
- Milk jugs and large plastic pop bottles will protect some of your spring plants from early frosts and rabbits. First, plant you seedlings. Tomatoes and peppers work best for this project. Cut the bottom off the bottle or jug, and place it over the plant with the lid off. Mound soil around the edges to hold it in place and help keep the cold out. If you live in a windy area, push a dowel or narrow stake through the hole and into the soil next to your seedling. With the milk jugs, you have the option of putting the stake on the outside near the handle and tying it to the handle.
- Purses, satchels, and backpacks can be made out of old plastic grocery bags. Lay a bag flat. Fold it lengthwise until it forms a strip about 1 inch wide. Cut off the handles and the bottom. Cut the bag into strips about 1 inch wide by cutting across the bag. Each strip when unraveled will form a hoop. Knot the hoops together. Repeat this until you have a very long "rope" made of bags. Wind your rope into a ball similar to a ball of yarn. Use a large crochet needle to crochet your bag. Generally, you can follow patterns that use regular yarn.
