Arya Samaj Weddings in India

Today, people aspire to have dream weddings for themselves which includes huge amount of money and flamboyance. But there are few people that do not believe in such elaborate occasions and are not rigid and specific about their rituals and customs for which Arya Samaj weddings in India is the best option as these weddings are the simplest form of Hindu wedding. Arya Samaj does not believe in idol worship and was founded by Swami Dayanand Saraswati. The marriages are done according to Vedic rituals where anyone even a non-Hindu can also come for his marriage, but he has to go through a conversion through a process of purification known as Shuddhi.

Generally people that cannot afford a big fat Indian marriage or are non believers in such staunch rituals prefer an Arya Samaj wedding. The bride and the groom wear simple clothes such as the bride is draped in beautiful saree along with gold ornaments worn around her body parts. The jewelry is not heavy and the bride is not over dressed. Groom on the other hand, either wears a dhoti kurta or some other dress of his preference. Today, lots of Indian matrimonial sites and agencies have mushroomed that help young adults in finding the right life partner for them. These sites have special pages for Arya Samaj believers as well.

The wedding is not a 2-3 days affair; it is a short ceremony that lasts for an hour and where the Vedic chants that are recited are translated into simple language so that it is well understood by the marrying couple. There are few close relatives that attend the wedding and become witnesses for the wedding. There is limited pomp and show and flamboyancy as the couple believes in sanctity of marriage and desire for a simple spiritual wedding.

The Arya Samaj marriage commences with arrival of the groom in the wedding venue where Madhuparka ritual is performed. In this ritual the groom eats Madhuparka which is the mixture of curd, honey and cream. The bride then give him water three time and each time the groom sprinkles water on his body and feet and finally drinks it the third time. Then the groom holds the water and the bride sprinkles water on her. This practice symbolizes of a happy beginning of the couple into the new life after marriage.

After this, the bride and the groom sit in the mandap in front of the holy fire and the pundit starts chanting mantras and tells them about their duties after marriage. The bride of the father performs the ritual of Kanyadaan in which he gives his daughters hand into groom's hand which symbolizes that from now her daughter is groom's responsibility. This is followed by paani grahan ceremony in which the groom promises to fulfill all the responsibility and keep his wife happy. The couple then together takes parikrama and performs the ritual called Saptapadi where they take seven rounds around the sacred fire.

The marriage rituals are completed and the couple takes blessings from their elders by touching their feet and the bride leaves her parents house and starts living in her husband's home. Arya Samaj bride and groom reflect Indian weddings in its simplest and purest form where one puts the rituals and Vedic mantras above the hullaballoo of wedding celebrations.
