- 1). Ask the hotel about loyalty programs and become a member if it has one. Loyalty programs are often used by major hotel and motel chains. Each time you stay in a hotel, you earn points on your card. Redeem those points for cheaper rates on hotel rooms and even free rooms. You also receive access to a free newsletter, which often comes with discounts or coupons.
- 2). Book hotels during the off-season. The high season is when the area sees the largest number of tourists and hotels are less likely to lower rates because there's a guaranteed customer base. Hotels drop rates during the off-season, to attract more customers and to keep rooms full.
- 3). Negotiate or haggle with the hotel over the price of the room. If you find a hotel that you like, call and ask to speak to the manager. Tell the manager that you're interested in staying, but wanted to know about any lower rates or unadvertised discounts. Offer a lower rate and see if the hotel is willing to work with you.
- 4). Stay in hotels away from the center of town or in a nearby suburb. In general, the further you stay from popular attractions, the more money you save. These hotels have lower rates to compete with bigger hotels in the center of town.
- 5). Bid on hotels through a site like Priceline. Hotel bidding sites give travelers the chance to offer lower rates for hotels in specific cities and towns. You enter the price you want to pay and it matches you with any available hotels.
