- 1). Remove all the food from the freezer. Discard anything you don't recognize or any food that is covered in ice and freezer burned.
- 2). Place the contents of opened packages, such as opened bags of frozen fruits and vegetables, into square plastic storage containers. Use containers that are designed for the freezer. Some cheap plastic containers will snap if left in the freezer too long.
- 3). Label the containers with the name of the food and the date you placed the food in the container. When new food goes into the freezer, write the date of purchase on it before you put in. If you are storing leftover foods, such as soup, pour into a container, leaving 1/2 inch for expansion as the food freezes, and label with the name and the date when you prepared the food.
- 4). Stack frozen dinners and other processed frozen food packages that are unopened in a storage bin. Position the dinners and packages so that you can see each one without having to dig through the bin.
- 5). List the contents of each bin on a piece of paper and tape to the front of the bin so you can easily see what's inside without sliding it out. Cross of the items as you eat them.
- 6). Slide the bin into the back of the freezer.
- 7). Stack the plastic containers in front of the bin. Use the food in the containers before the food in the bin if there are duplicates.
