- 1). Open parental controls in Internet Explorer. Open your Internet Explorer browser and left-click on the tab "Tools" followed by "Internet Options." Look for the tab labeled "Content" and click the "Enable" button to open a separate box.
- 2). Slide the content bar based on preferences. The content bar controls what content is deemed inappropriate, such as drug use, nudity, and violence. The lower you slide the bar, the less your child is able to view. You can also type in specific websites to allow or ban.
- 3). Set your password for parental controls for a Mac. Without a password your child can easily turn off parental controls, which means you'll need to set one up from your administrator account. The password for your Mac is created when you first establish an account on your computer. To access this password go to the apple icon, and click on System Preferences. Click on the "Accounts" button, and click on the "Change Password" button if you need to change it, otherwise it is already set.
- 4). Set password for PC. Click the Start button, followed by Control Panel and Parental Controls. Select the user account that will have the parental controls, and follow the online screen instructions for setting up a password.
- 5). Open parental controls on a Mac. Click on the apple icon on the upper left-hand corner of the screen, followed by clicking on System Preferences. From there, click on "Parental Controls." Click on the account your child uses on the left side of the Parental Controls box, followed by clicking the "Enable Parental Controls" button.
- 6). Click the Content tab. Click the appropriate setting for internet use at the "Website Restrictions" section. You can also limit how long they are on the computer and disable other applications on the computer.
- 7). Purchase parental control software. Software can be downloaded online or purchased at a brick-and-mortar store. Follow the package's instructions for use.
