DIY: Home Decoration

Everyone wants their home to be beautiful, everyone wants their home to be warm and welcoming, and everyone wants their home design to be unique, special and one of a kind. You can achieve almost all of this by going around home depots or IKEAs, flipping through catalogues and magazines, but in order to have a unique home design, you will need to put in a bit more time and effort. The problem with large home decoration distributers is that everything they sell is available to everyone. Anyone with money on their bank account can flip through a catalogue, get up and order a piece of furniture or some decorative piece online. Where is the originality in that?
Mind you, I'm not saying you should have everything custom made or that you should turn into a carpenter all of a sudden, but if you have the patience and the will to learn, you can do a lot of things to give your space a more personal feel. We are here to talk about some of the things you can do to decorate your home by yourself.
Home decoration need not be an expensive endeavor, if you play your cards right. We are going to try and find a few inexpensive ways to boost up the looks of your home. 'How do we do this', you ask? Well, it is quite simple, my friends, we use refuse material that you have around the house or we buy cheap stuff from the flea market and modify them. We can also use new home modification materials, but in such a way that they really pop out. This article is intended for people that haven't really come across any DIY decoration ideas so far. We are going to try and give you a general idea about how it is all done, using what tools, and hopefully give you a clear picture about how diverse this whole "Do It Yourself" thing can be. All you need to get started is free time, good will and a bit of cash.
  • Plants as Decoration

We are all aware that plants are used to decorate homes, but we are not just talking about your standard "Put it in a pot, wait for it to grow" routine. There are a lot of ways to decorate your home using plants. For example, taking a simple jar, filling it with dirt and planting some grass and some wild green plant can create very interesting looking DIY terrariums. Also we can use dried, pressed leaves glued to regular glass which are filled with candles in order to create interesting shadow patterns for a romantic atmosphere. Wood is also a great element to use in home decoration.

  • Mosaic Tiles

Tiles are no longer reserved just for kitchens and bathrooms. There is a whole range of tiles out there made from a variety of materials such as stainless steel, glass, marble and so on, made specifically with the idea of giving you a chance to be creative by making your own mosaic. Buying them for decorative purposes is not a big investment when you realize what you get. The variety of materials makes them viable for any type of room and also gives them the adaptability they need to fit any style of home decoration. There are instructions on the web on how to piece together a certain pattern or how to make your own. Have fun piecing the puzzle together.

  • Printing Is Cheap

In the age of digital photographs we have forgotten how beautiful photographs can be when arranged on the wall. Also, modern technology has lowered the prices on photo-printing so much that it is ridiculous. So, making wallpaper out of your photos is an inexpensive and easy to do project. If you want to put them in frames and don't want to spend too much money on them, we have a solution for that to. Using old CD casings (which we all have lying around the house) can turn them into perfect frames for your photos. By combining the power of a printer, a pair of scissors and some spray paint you can create almost any shape of stencil to paint over and thus decorate your wall the way you want to. There are a lot more ideas like these out there. If you can picture it, you can find it.

  • Turning the Old Into New

There are tons of ways to turn old stuff into new stuff. We are not just talking about repairing stuff; we are talking about converting the function of one household object into another. Let me give you an example so you can get the picture. Let's say you have some old window frames (along with the glass) you were about to throw out. You can easily convert those window frames into a glass-top garden table. Old boat paddles can be turned into a garden fence and so on. Detailed instructions for making these and many more projects are all over the web. Look them up.

  • Building from Scratch

By buying some cheap basic materials you can make all kind of wonderful ornaments. You can make your own scented candles, your own picture frames, your own bookbinders, paper holders, lamps and so on. This may all seem a bit overwhelming, but trust me when I say that it is not all that hard to do. Just find a well thought through project, follow it and you should be fine.

This is all just to get you interested. Believe me when I say that we haven't even scratched the surface with all this. A whole world of DIY projects waits for those who are willing to look for them. After a while you will even start to get the feel for the whole thing and even start to do your own variations on the projects you were presented with. Who knows, you might even come up with some of your own. Remember, be patient, take your time and try to have fun while working on your projects and soon you will have a home decorated to suit your needs.
