- 1). Scrape the closet flange clean of any old wax, whether the flange is located on the floor or the wall. Install the heads of two new closet bolts into the slots of the flange. For a floor flange, make sure the bolts are parallel to the wall behind the flange. For a wall flange, make certain the bolts are parallel to the floor below. The wall flange should be located approximately 4 inches above the floor.
- 2). Spread a towel on the floor. Invert the Crane toilet bowl on top of the towel. Press the wax ring in position over the toilet horn, which is the circular drain recess on the bowl bottom. If the toilet is a back-outlet model, instead of inverting it, simply press the wax ring in place over the recess in the lower rear of the bowl.
- 3). Lower the bowl in place on the floor flange, with the closet bolts passing up through the holes in the toilet base. Press your body weight down onto the bowl. Slide a washer, with "This Side Up" facing upward, on each bolt. Thread a nut onto each bolt and alternately tighten the nuts until each is snug, using an adjustable wrench. If the toilet is a back-outlet model, proceed to Step 4. Otherwise, proceed to Step 7.
- 4). Insert a properly sized drill bit into a power drill. Drill two pilot holes into the floor for the floor mounting of a back-outlet bowl.
- 5). Push the bowl back onto the wall flange, with the closet bolts protruding through the mounting holes located on either side. Install washers on the bolts, with "This Side Up" facing you. Install and tighten the nuts until they are snug, using an adjustable wrench.
- 6). Slide a plastic washer, marked "This Side Up", onto each of the two lag screws. Screw the lag screws through the floor mounting holes in the back-outlet bowl into the pilot holes, using the power drill.
- 7). Invert the Crane tank on top of the towel on the floor. Place the large spud gasket, which resembles a large doughnut, on the threaded outlet on the tank bottom. Carefully lower the tank onto the bowl so the spud gasket fits evenly into the water inlet opening on top of the bowl.
- 8). Place rubber washers on the tank-to-bowl bolts and insert the bolts through the bolt holes in the tank bottom. Install a metal washer, followed by a nut, on each bolt from underneath. Hand-tighten the nuts onto the bolts, and finish tightening the nuts with an adjustable wrench until the nuts are snug.
- 9). Connect one end of the supply line to the shut-off valve. Connect the other end to the threaded shank of the fill valve, which protrudes underneath the left side of the tank. Tighten the supply line a quarter-turn past hand-tight, using an adjustable wrench.
- 10
Place the plastic tubing that runs from the water inlet regulator into the overflow tube's holding ring. Place the lid on the tank. - 11
Install the toilet seat. Turn the shut-off valve counterclockwise to turn on the water. Check around the toilet for any leaks. Install the plastic caps on the bowl bolts.
