- 1). Compare pre-paid cellular service providers to see who best fits your needs for the way you call, text and use data services (Web browsing, ringtone and music downloading or mobile video streaming). Note that different companies and services may be offered based on where you live. Check pre-paid providers such as Virgin Mobile, Boost Mobile, TracFone and Straight Talk Wireless; contract cell phone providers may have pre-paid plans as well, such as AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.
- 2). Purchase your chosen pre-paid cell phone either in person at a retail store or online. Check individual retail stores for pre-paid service providers, or check discount stores such as Big Lots and Wal-Mart for pre-paid phones.
- 3). Read the back of the package to see if any time is included in your purchase of the phone, as some carriers automatically provide you with free minutes. You can purchase calling cards for additional minutes at the same time you purchase your pre-paid cell phone.
- 4). Call the number in your phone's instructions to activate it and check your balance. If your chosen cell phone allows for monthly service at a flat rate, you can choose to subscribe to it when you call. As of September 2010, carriers such as Verizon offer such service on a no-contract basis, which means no credit check for you.
- 5). Purchase additional time for your pre-paid cell phone at whichever retailer stocks your cell phone or add minutes online or over the phone, depending on your pre-paid plan.
