Motorola wants to hit Apple where it hurts and recapture the smartphone market while usurping the iPad from its tablet throne. At the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Motorola Mobile - the newly formed company that will deal specifically with consumer products - unveiled some pretty powerful mobile devices, including two 4G smartphones and a spiffy 3G tablet.
As reported by technewsworld.com, Motorola's new power smartphone is the Atrix 4G. It's an Android phone that is capable of functioning as a laptop or even desktop computer. With a dock containing USB ports and an HDMI plug it takes cloud computing to a whole new level. PC World's Keir Thomas calls it a cloud computing bridge device and says that it has enormous potential to revolutionise the corporate IT world.
Thomas writes, "It avoids any cloud security issues because data is never held on the phone at any time. All [the user] ever does is use his phone to access data or even entire operating systems contained elsewhere. If the phone is lost or stolen, then it's unfortunate but not a disaster."
The specs obsessed should note that the phone contains a dual-core processor with 2 GHz of power and 1 GB of RAM. There is also a fingerprint reader for added security.
Motorola's second 4G smartphone comes in the form of the Droid Bionic. It also has a dual-core processor, but only 512 Mb of RAM. The third smartphone unveiled at the CES is the Cliq 2 which provides users with the ability to create different profiles for "work", "home" and "weekend".
Xoom is Motorola's new tablet offering. It runs on Android 3.0 (also known as Honeycomb) and while it currently only has 3G capabilities, it will be upgraded to 4G in around four months time. 3G devices will be upgradable to 4G.
Addressing the audience at CES Sanjay Jha, CEO of Motorola Mobility, said, "We're innovating across the board -- not just in smartphones -- as we revolutionise mobile computing with experiences that push the limits of what you thought was possible with your mobile device."
Specs-wise the Xoom has two cameras: a 5 megapixel camera at the rear (with HD video capabilities) and a 2 megapixel camera at the front. It has 32 GB of on-board memory and a battery capable of delivering 10 hours of video playback.
