How to Clean an Indoor Fountain

Indoor fountains are becoming more and more popular as decorative pieces as well as helping to maintain clean air and providing other health benefits. Indoor fountains are usually either tabletop fountains or the more popular wall mounted fountain or floor mounted fountain.

Once the piece is installed, which usually takes less than one hour, it is too easy to leave it to continually pump and recycle its water from basin to top and back again.

Like any other ornament or piece of furniture, an indoor fountain needs to be cleaned to maintain its beauty and functionality.

Cleaning an indoor fountain is a very simple process. The outsides can be wiped down with a damp cloth while doing regular housework but every couple of months you may want to give more attention to it.

The best way to keep an indoor fountain clean is to ensure the water is not building up impurities. Changing the water on a regular basis will ensure this. If you have a smaller fountain you may be using distilled water. Distilled water, by its very nature is already free from impurities. If you are using distilled water you may not need to clean quite as often.

For larger indoor fountains such as the floor mounted fountains you may use regular tap water and at a purifying agent. Even with the use of distilled water or purifying agents, your fountains water will still need to be changed.

To change the water, you will need to turn off the power to the pump before draining the fountain.

To drain the fountain you can either siphon the water out, if the water basin is at a decent height to allow siphoning or use a shop vacuum pump. I use a carpet shampooer that has a hose attachment and this works very well. You may also be able to disconnect the pump and let the water run out from it into a bucket.

If you use rocks in the basin of your indoor fountain, they need to be taken out, washed and wiped clean to remove any algae buildup. Wipe around the basin with a clean cloth or sponge to remove sediment, algae and water marks from the sides. The pump will also need wiping clean and the tubing freed of algae build up.

It does not take too long to pump out the water and clean the water fountain and it is very easy to get into a routine for cleaning it. Depending on the fountain and the materials it is made of, you may need to consult your user's manual for specific cleaning instructions

Put your fountain back together; add fresh clean water and the water conditioner of choice if not using distilled water.
Maintaining a regular maintenance regime will ensure your indoor fountain will continue to work efficiently and provide you with the many health benefits.
