How to Personalize a Home With Paint and Accessories

    • 1). Look through several decorating magazines, model homes and furniture stores to find which look "grabs" you. When you find a look that moves you, take time to analyze it to determine which elements you like and which ones you don't. Once you figure that out, start recording them. If you saw it in a magazine, collect the clippings so you can look back at them later. If you saw the look in a model home or furniture store, take a photo of it or pick up one of their brochures. You can also take a quiz on HGTV's website to find your style. A link is provided in the resource section.

    • 2). Look around your own home, and determine what you need to change to get the same look, feel or at least the essence of the room that you like. Remember, you're not trying to make your home look like someone else's. You're just trying to make it look more like you. Look carefully at the style and colors of your furniture, the colors and patterns on your walls, the fabrics, and all the accessories and see what you can keep and what must go. Most of the time, a few minor changes with paint and accessories alone can do the trick.

Some designers recommend taking everything out of the room and starting over. First, paint the walls. Let yourself go and be who you are when you select the paint colors. If hot pink is you, go for it. If you love the uncluttered look of white, paint the room white. Look at all the possibilities for texturing and adding pattern to the paint and pick one that speaks to you. Next, bring in the pieces of furniture that provide the functionality for the room one at a time and place them where they need to be. Then start embellishing the room with accessories.

What do you love? If your world revolves around your family, place items in the room that say family to you. Have you always wanted to be a photographer? Put a collection of old cameras or photographs in the room. Do you love to read? Fill bookcases to overflowing with books by your favorite authors. Do you have a green thumb? Place plants and flowers in strategic places. You get the idea.

    • 5). Even smaller touches say alot about you. Choose touches like coasters, candles, lamps and other small touches with care, using only those things you truly like or that have sentimental meaning to you. Place lighting strategically for the effect you are trying to create.
