- 1). Visit Symantec's website to download the W32.Downadup removal tool (see Resources). Select a location you will remember, such as your desktop or "My documents" to save the "D.exe" file. Click "Save."
- 2). Close all running programs.
- 3). Disconnect your computer from the Internet, including unplugging the Internet cables.
- 4). Click the Windows "Start" button. Right-click "My Computer" and click "Properties." Click the "System Restore" tab. Click the check box next to "Turn off system restore." Click "Apply." Click "Yes" and "OK." These instructions apply only to disabling system restore in Windows XP. If you have Vista or Windows 7, disabling system restore has a few differences.
- 5). Navigate to the downloaded "D.exe" file and double-click it. Click "Start." The removal tool will begin to run. The removal tool will alert you when it is finished and will display the deleted infected files.
- 6). Click the "Start" button and select "Restart." Double-click the removal tool file again and run it a second time. The Conficker worm is no longer in your system if the removal tool does not find it again. Access "System Restore" as above and uncheck "Turn off system protection" to enable System Restore again. Connect any disconnected Internet cables back into your computer. Double-click the Norton AntiVirus program and run "Live Update" to download the latest virus definitions.
