- 1). Slide a floor jack under one side of your car and raise it high enough for you to crawl underneath. Insert jack stands under the frame rails and lower the car onto them. Place an oil drain pan under the engine.
- 2). Locate and remove the oil filter with an oil filter wrench. Discard the old filter. Remove the oil drain plug from the oil pan with the appropriately-sized socket and allow the oil to drain into the pan.
- 3). Fill the new oil filter to the brim and moisten the sealing ring on top with high-viscosity (30W or higher), high mileage engine oil. High mileage oil contains not only anti-wear additives but seal conditioners designed to make the valve stem seals swell slightly. After they swell up, the seals will tighten down onto the valves, helping to re-seal the combustion chamber.
- 4). Install the new oil filter with the oil filter wrench and reinstall the oil drain plug. Raise the car with the jack, remove the jack stands, lower it to the ground then open the hood.
- 5). Locate the oil filler cap on the engine's valve cover. If your engine doesn't have a filler cap, simply pour the new oil into the oil dipstick tube with a funnel.
- 6). Pour half a quart of high mileage oil into the engine. Pour oil stop leak with seal conditioner into the half empty quart of oil and shake up the container to mix the two together. Thinning the stop leak in this way will help to ensure quick and even distribution into your engine's oil system. Pour the mixture into the engine.
- 7). Continue adding oil to your system until you meet the manufacturer's specification. The the oil capacity is usually listed on the information sticker under the hood of your vehicle.
- 8). Start the engine and allow it to idle for five to 10 minutes or until it's up to operating temperature. Look for leaks around the oil filter and drain plug and check your oil level with the dipstick.
