How to Replace a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Brake

    • 1). Loosen, but do not remove, the lug nuts on the front wheels, using a ratchet and socket.

    • 2). Jack up the front of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.

    • 3). Remove the lug nuts from the front wheels and pull the wheels from the vehicle.

    • 4). Look on the rear of the brake caliper and locate the two caliper bolts. There is one upper bolt and one lower bolt.

    • 5). Loosen the caliper bolts with a ratchet and socket, then pull the caliper from the brake assembly.

    • 6). Attach the caliper to a suspension component on the car using the bungee strap. Do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose, as this may cause damage to the hose.

    • 7). Remove the outboard brake pad by placing the flat head screwdriver under the metal clip on the rear of the pad. Pry upward on the clip until it passes over the raised portion of the caliper. Pull the pad from the caliper.

    • 8). Place the C-clamp over the brake caliper so that the fixed portion is contacting the rear of the caliper and the screw portion is contacting in inboard brake pad. Tighten the C-clamp until the inboard brake pad is pressed completely against the caliper's body.

    • 9). Grasp the inboard brake pad, then pull it upward and away from the caliper. Notice that several metal clips on the rear of the pad go into the caliper piston.

    • 10

Place the new inboard brake pad over the piston so that the clips line up with the caliper's piston. Press the clips into the piston, just as they came out, until the pad is fully seated against the caliper's body.

    • 11

Place the outboard pad so that the metal clip is lined up with the fingers of the caliper's body. Press the brake pad down until the brake pad's clips snap into place.

    • 12

Remove the caliper from the bungee strap and place it over the brake assembly. Hand-tighten the upper and lower caliper bolts.

    • 13

Tighten the caliper bolts to 26 foot-pounds of torque, using the torque wrench and a socket.

    • 14

Repeat steps 4 through 13 for the brake pads on the other side of the PT Cruiser.

    • 15

Place the wheels on the vehicle and hand-tighten the lug nuts.

    • 16

Lift the vehicle off the jack stands, using the jack. Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground.

    • 17

Torque the lug nuts to 100 foot-pounds using the torque wrench and socket.

    • 18

Pump the brake pedal repeatedly until it feels firm.
