- To create your own look, purchase unfinished pieces. When you purchase unfinished wood, you can see for yourself that it is a solid piece of pine furniture, and not covered with pine veneers. Stain it yourself in country colors, such as mustard yellow, a faded blue, or even black. Wood stains are transparent, and will reveal the natural look of the wood when dry. Or try one of the tinted wax finishes, which color the wood in natural shades, such as maple, oak or cherry.
- For an extra dose of character, choose furniture made from salvaged barn boards, many of them over 100 years old. These wide-plank pieces have all the natural grain and imperfections of pine, but have the added nail marks and dings that go with natural aging. The wide boards lend themselves easily to tabletops and simple cabinets. Choose existing designs or have a piece custom-made.
- Country pine furniture has been around for centuries, due to the abundance of pine trees around the world. Antique European country dressing tables, washstands, desks, blanket boxes and other types of European furniture can be found in antique shops or online. Choose this furniture for its extra-fine country look and old world construction, including dove-tailed joints.
- Save some money and purchase mass-produced pine furniture at big outlet stores such as Ikea or Target. Some of these stores have a good selection of pine wardrobes, hutches and butcher block tables. Other retailers such as JC Penney and Sears also carry country pine furniture.
