- 1). Open OpenOffice on your computer and open your essay that requires a bibliography. Click "Tools" in the toolbar to open the drop-down window, then select "Bibliography Database."
- 2). Click the green arrow in the upper left column to expand the window, then click the yellow star to add a new bibliography entry. Fill out the fields with the necessary information (book title, author name, page number) for your first entry. Take care in choosing an easily identifiable name you will use to find this entry later within the database. Repeat this step until you have added all the entries you need.
- 3). Cite a reference from your bibliography within the essay by setting your cursor to the spot where you want the citation to appear. Go to "Insert" in the toolbar, select "Indexes and Tables," then click "Bibliography Entry." Find the entry you want in the drop-down box by the name you gave it in Step 2, then click "Insert."
- 4). Create the bibliography at the end of your essay. Go to "Insert" in the toolbar, click "Indexes and Tables," then select the second "Indexes and Tables" that appears. Click the drop-down box next to "Type" and select "Bibliography." Repeat for all of your references.
- 5). Type the title in the title field (most essays will simply use the title "Bibliography" or "Works Cited"), and uncheck the box next to "Protect Against Manual Changes" so that you can edit your bibliography if you wish. Click "OK" to create your bibliography.
