- 1). Identify whether your pond liner is made from PVC or EPDM. If you installed the pond yourself, look on the original packaging. If you hired a professional, call the agency to inquire. Otherwise, you can feel the liner yourself. A PVC liner feels more like plastic, while an EPDM liner is made of a type of rubber.
- 2). Dry out the liner area you wish to repair. You may have to lower the water level in the pond or dam to do this. Brush a wet rag in some salt and rub it against the area to remove any algae buildup. You can then let the liner dry naturally in the sun or pass a small propane torch by the area to dry it more quickly.
- 3). Buy a patch kit that matches the material of your liner. An EPDM patch kit likely includes the correct adhesive needed to glue the patch. If you have a PVC liner, purchase contact cement.
- 4). Spread a layer of the adhesive to both the liner and the patch and press the patch to the liner as instructed on the patching kit. If you are using contact cement and PVC, allow the glue to dry for about three minutes if the temperature is near 80 degrees before applying the patch. If the temperature is closer to 50 degrees, allow the glue to dry for around eight minutes. Press and hold the patch to the liner for 30 seconds.
