- 1). Grip the ball with the holes facing upward to throw a fastball. Place your thumb, index and middle fingers on the holes. Place your ring finger slightly below the holes, and make sure your pinkie does not touch the ball. Throw the ball as fast as you can with a side-arm motion.
- 2). Grip the ball with the holes facing right to throw a curveball. Place your index finger and thumb opposite from the holes, with your middle finger located slightly to the right of your index. Place your ring finger underneath the ball. Throw this pitch at three-quarters of your maximum velocity. This pitch will break to the outside of the plate on left-handed hitters.
- 3). Grip the ball with the holes facing left to throw a slider. Place your index finger and thumb on the holes, with your middle finger located slightly to the right of your index. Place your ring finger underneath the ball. Toss this pitch at three-quarters of your maximum velocity. This pitch will break to the outside of the plate on right-handed hitters.
- 4). Grip the ball so the holes are facing downward to throw a sinker. Place your index and thumb on the seam of the whiffleball, gripping opposite sides of the ball. Place your middle finger directly underneath the ball on the holes, and throw side-armed. The harder you throw, the more the ball will break. Aim high in the strike zone to fool hitters.
- 5). Grip the ball with the holes facing upward to throw a knuckleball. Place your thumb directly underneath the ball, with your other four fingers directly on the holes. Hold the ball near the side of your face at the start of your release, and throw the ball similar to a shot-putter. If thrown correctly, the ball will have lots of movement but no rotation.
