How to Make Pillow Covers & Closers

    • 1). Measure the pillow you want to cover. Add 1 inch to the width and 1 inch to the height and record these figures. These are the dimensions for the piece of material that will become the front of the pillow cover.

    • 2). Cut the material for the front of the cover using the dimensions recorded in Step 1.

    • 3). Take the width of the front piece, divide by 2 and add 4 1/2 inches to that figure. The resulting figure is the width of the two back pieces. The height of the two back pieces is the same as the height of the front piece. Record the width and the height of the two back pieces.

    • 4). Cut two pieces of material for the back of the cover using the dimensions recorded in Step 4.

    • 5). Iron all three pieces.

    • 6). Fold the fabric over ½ inch on the height side of one of the back pieces, keeping the wrong side of the fabric on the inside of the fold, and press with an iron.

    • 7). Fold the fabric over again another ½ inch and press. Sew along the crease using a straight stitch ¼ inch from the edge.

    • 8). Repeat Steps 6 and 7 with the second piece of material for the back.

    • 9). Put the front piece of material on your work surface with the right side of the fabric facing up.

    • 10

Line up one of the back pieces with the left-hand edge of the front piece, placing the back piece face down on top of the front piece. The raw edge of the back piece should be on the left and the finished edge should be on the right.

    • 11

Line up the second back piece with the right-hand edge of the front piece, placing the back piece face down on the front piece. The raw edge of the back piece should be on the right and the finished edge should be on the left. The two back pieces should overlap.

    • 12

Pin the three pieces together around the perimeter of the front piece.

    • 13

Sew the pieces together ½ inch in from the edge of the front piece. Remove the pins as you sew.

    • 14

Cut off a small triangle of fabric at each corner. Cut no less than 3/16 inch away from the stitching.

    • 15

Turn the case right side out and insert your pillow.
