A Wedding Invitation Q & A - Get Your Questions Answered

Wedding invitations can be really tricky.
There are rules and expectations, and frankly, nearly every turn seems to be fraught with disaster.
Follow the great advice below to make the wedding invitation process easier.
  Q.
Is it necessary to use the same font for all my wedding stationery?  A.
Your invitation and all enclosures that will be mailed with it should be consistent in every element, including the font (or typestyle).
Announcements should also mirror your invitation in style and formality.
You'll find it helpful to keep samples of everything you order so you can maintain a consistent theme.
  Q.
I have found a whimsical font, but I'm not sure it is formal enough for my wedding invitations.
Is it acceptable to use something other than the traditional typestyles?   A.
If you admire a more casual typestyle or something whimsical, save it for the rehearsal dinner or other pre-wedding party.
Remember that your wedding invitation may be that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to send a classic invitation.
     Q.
I find it confusing to look at charts that contain just a single line of type.
Is there an easier way to examine a typestyle?   A.
You will find it most helpful to study sample invitations in the typestyle you are considering.
That way you can see a variety of letters, with the same number of words as will be included on your own invitation.
     Q.
If I don't choose engraving, will my invitations automatically be thermographed?   A.
No, always ask that question in the beginning to be sure they are not created with offset printing.
Remember to inquire about any extra charges for thermography, too.
     Q.
I have selected lavender as my primary wedding color.
Is it appropriate to use lavender ink for my wedding invitations?   A.
If you are planning a formal wedding, remember that white and ecru are the most widely accepted paper color choices, with black the most formal ink option.
Save the lavender ink for a pre-wedding party or bridal shower.
     Q.
Is there any advantage to ordering a card-style instead of a folded-style invitation?   A.
If you order a folded-style invitation, be aware that they will arrive flat and will require folding by you or a helpful bridesmaid!  Q.
What if I need extra invitations at a later date? Is it expensive to reorder?   A.
Since the most costly aspect of printing wedding invitations is the set-up, the answer is yes.
If you reorder later your printer will be starting from scratch to re-create your invitation, and will pass the charges on to you.
It's best to figure a number of extra invitations into your initial order, keeping in mind that you'll want several for each family to keep as mementos.
And be aware that if you see pricing information offering "additional 25" invitations for a certain price, the special offer applies only to the initial order.
     Q.
What is the purpose of the folded style of invitation?   A.
A single sheet of paper is not an option because it is not substantial enough.
The folded style of invitation is twice as sturdy, and it will create a regal appearance when your wedding guests remove it from the envelope.
Remember that you may also select a heavier stock that is sturdy enough to use without folding, often called card stock.
     Q.
Should any writing appear on the inside of a folded invitation?   A.
No, the folded style is simply part of the traditional design of a formal wedding invitation.
The wording should appear on the outside of the invitation.
       Q.
Which is more popular, the script fonts or the non-script versions?   A.
Both are equally popular and equally elegant.
Your typestyle choice should be based on the style and formality of your invitation, as well as the number of lines.
       Q.
What is a watermark?   A.
Watermarks are faint patterns or designs in paper that are visible when the paper is held up to light.
A watermark is not a flaw, but distinguishes the paper's high quality.
     Q.
Is white paper always the same shade? The samples I have reviewed do not seem to be consistent.
  A.
No, in fact you will discover a variety of shades of "white" when you start shopping for the perfect paper for your invitations.
The shades usually range, in order of brightness, from bright to soft white to traditional white   Of course, you will have thousands of other questions about your wedding invitations.
Make sure that you find a wedding resource that your trust, and that is with you every step of the way.
