- Patients taking Mytussin have reported severe allergic reactions to the drug. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include swelling of the tongue, face, lips and throat, difficulty breathing, chest pain, hives, rash, hallucinations, fainting, confusion, irregular heartbeat, trouble urinating, trouble sleeping, dizziness and seizures. Also, headache, fever, blurred vision, mood changes, involuntary muscle movement and lightheadedness have been associated with an allergic reaction to Mytussin. Seek immediate medical care if you experience any of these symptoms.
- Mild to severe nervous system side effects may occur while taking Mytussin. These include respiratory depression, psychosis, mental depression, stupor, delirium,severe drowsiness and mood swings. Anxiety, tremors, nervousness, headaches and dizziness have also been reported. Thirty percent of patients treated with Mytussin have also experienced having trouble sleeping. Though many of these are not life-threatening, consult your physician if they persist.
- Cardiovascular side effects connected to Mytussin treatments can be quite severe. Drugs.com states that patients have experienced increases in heart rate, chest pain, tightness of chest, abnormally low blood pressure (hypotension), high blood pressure (hypertension), and abnormal heart rhythm. Many of these symptoms are more likely to occur in patients who have preexisting heart problems. Mytussin has also been associated with complete kidney failure in some patients.
- Mild gastrointestinal side effects include vomiting, upset stomach (nausea) and constipation. It is believed that these occur when patients take higher than normal dosages of Mytussin. In some cases, severe constipation has lead to the tearing of the colon (colonic perforation). Other serious side effects include anorexia and gastric irritation. Fifteen percent of those taking Mytussin have also reported having a dry mouth, nose and throat.
- Dermatologic side effects have also occurred and include dry skin, rash and hives. Immunologic side effects are possible full-body allergic reaction. In other cases, patients have reported having trouble passing urine (urinary retention). Sweating, abdominal cramps and blurred vision have been associated with withdrawal symptoms caused by codeine dependent people. People taking this drug should avoid alcohol and driving, as it impairs your thinking.
