- A belt grinder helps a bladesmith shape handles, grind blades and dress the ends of leather casing. A belt grinder is a heavy-duty steel machine that can polish, finish, descal, bevel and sharpen tools. Usually belt grinders can grind steel, brass, copper and aluminum.
- Invest in plenty of sandpaper. This valuable tool helps finish blades, handles and fittings. "A $1,500 knife may have $5 worth of steel and a $50 worth of sandpaper invested" in the project, according to the interview with master bladesmith Burt Foster in the December 2009 issue of Popular Mechanics.
- An anvil is a chunk of solid metal or hard stone. Bladesmiths use a hammer to shape steel, iron or metal into different knives, swords and daggers. Usually a bladesmith uses a cross-peen hammer to strike materials into shape.
- Bladesmiths uses a forge to work. The forge heats via propane gas, coal or charcoal. You can weld steel into various shapes and forms of knives. You use the tool to heat materials. This also can represent the entire workshop. In addition, it can serve as a bellow, which pushes air towards the fire allowing the fuel to burn at high temperatures to shape steel or iron. Alternatively, it can simply serve as the location to make fire.
