- 1). Before you paint your fiberglass composite, first mix up some fiberglass filler putty. You can find these products at any auto or boat supply store. Then fill any holes or imperfections with the fiberglass putty. Smooth out the putty, and let it fully cure.
- 2). Next, use heavy grit sandpaper, such as 100 grit, to remove any excess putty or any paint that may have been previously applied to the fiberglass. Once your fiberglass composite becomes fairly smooth, switch up to 800 grit sandpaper. Really sand the fiberglass well, making it nice and smooth.
- 3). Before you paint the fiberglass you want to remove all the dust, debris, and grease that might be on the composite. This is none best by using a dry rag and acetone. Once the fiberglass is nice and clean, it is ready to be painted.
- 4). First apply a primer coat to the fiberglass. Most types of paints and primers are compatible with fiberglass, but it is best to ask your paint supply person for their recommendation. I personally prefer to paint fiberglass with polyurethane paints; these are extremely durable and have a beautiful finish. However, they are a little more expensive.
- 5). Wait until the primed fiberglass is totally dry, usually a couple hours. Now it is time to use your final paint coat. You can either spray on this paint or use a brush on the fiberglass. If you use a brush to paint the fiberglass, be sure to do light even strokes. Less paint is more, as you don't want the paint to bunch up on the composite.
- 6). Once your final coat of paint dries on the fiberglass, you can either add another coat, or apply the clear coat. Assuming you do not need another coat of paint, apply the clear just like the final paint coat. The clear coat will seal in the paint, and help protect it from the elements. Just let that dry, and you should be all set.
