- 1). Wrap the wire around the iron piece. The more times you wrap it around, the stronger the magnet will. Do not start wrapping at one end of the wire. Leave a tail end long enough to connect to the battery and allow you to move the magnet around. Leave enough wire on the other end as well to attach to the battery.
- 2). Bring both ends of the wire to the battery.
- 3). Strip a small section of the wire coating off with the wire strippers, so you can twist the wire around the battery connectors. It doesn't matter which wire connects to which connector.
- 4). Attach one wire to each connector. Give it a minute to magnetize the iron bar fully.
- 5). Test it on something such as another iron bar or small nail. It should pick it up.
