The Hermit stands upon a snowy mountaintop, looking out upon the world. In one hand he holds the lantern of truth to guide seekers below. In his other hand, he holds a staff, a symbol of his status as patriarch, and also to be used on the narrow paths of initiation. His cloak covers most of his body, and in some decks he uses it to shield the lantern, as thought to hide it from unworthy eyes. On the long dark nights of the soul, the Hermit is there to guide us in our quest for wisdom and knowledge.
When the Hermit appears in a reading, know that you have a chance to recieve wisdom from the Divine, or from the spirit world. This can also indicate a meeting with a mentor or teacher, or an encounter with someone who can guide and lead you in your upcoming endeavors, whether they are spiritual or material. The Hermit reminds us that our goals can be attained, but the journey is not always smooth or easy.
A reversed Hermit card shows someone who is unwilling to listen to the wisdom of their elders, or who refuses to take advice even when it's offered from knowledgable sources. This can also mean a tendency to be immature, despite the inner knowledge that it's time to grow up.
