Times Square Theaters

In the 1914-1915 Broadway theater season, 133 different productions were staged at 42 theaters around Times Square. Despite record numbers, this theater season was financially disastrous.

George M. Cohan Statue in Times Square

George M. Cohan was a famous figure in the New York City theater scene just after the turn of the century. Little Johnny Jones, his first big Broadway hit introduced his songs "Give My Regards To Broadway" and "The Yankee Doodle Boy". His statue was erected in the 1960s in recognition of musical contributions to the war effort through his songs "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "Over There."

Cleaning up Times Square in the Early 1990s

Massive efforts in the early 1990s contributed to creating the clean, safe area that is now Times Square. The opening of many major retailers, including Sephora, Toys 'R Us, and Virgin Megastore, as well as the renovations of many landmark Broadway theaters has lead to a virtual rebirth of the area.

Mayor Giuliani and Sex in Times Square

Mayor Giuliani is often credited with the "Disneyfication" of Times Square, particularly for his efforts to rid the area of crime and the toughening of enforcement of regulations and restrictions on x-rated theaters, stores and shows in the Times Square area.

Toys 'R Us in Times Square

In order to shoot the opening sequence of Vanilla Sky (which was not digitally created), the production was given permission to close Times Square in the late night/early morning hours one Sunday. The only digital modification of the scene was changing the NASDAQ news ticker to avoid dating the film through the coverage of the presidential election.

Times Square is a busy neighborhood in New York City almost continuously through the day and night. Nearly 100,000 visitors were recorded on a 2005 summer weekend day pedestrian count.
