- 1). Cut gardening twine into pieces that are approximately long enough to wrap around the diameter of the trunk or branch three to four times.
- 2). Select dowel rods that are substantial enough to support the trunk or branch but not heavy enough to weigh down the injured appendage. Purchase several sizes that you think may be appropriate and test them to see which will work best.
- 3). Place a dowel rod on the weak side of the branch or trunk and another rod on the opposite side to fashion a splint-like structure. Wrap gardening twine around it about every 6 inches. Wrap the twine around the injured appendage and tie it. Use multiple rods end-to-end for longer branches and trunks. For severely weakened branches or much heavier ones, brace the branch by tying nylon rope a couple of feet away from the trunk. Tie the other end of the nylon rope around the trunk to support the branch until it grows stronger.
