- "Slumber party" is a theme by itself, but it can be fun to have a theme within that theme to dictate the atmosphere, food and activities of the party. Slumber parties following a movie premiere or a television show's season finale are popular. Guests can dress as a favorite character and eat snacks that relate to the film or show in some way.
Teens who enjoy baking might consider a holiday-themed cookie-baking slumber party. Other themes include spa/makeup, video/board game night or a party based on a decade, complete with appropriate music and dress. An event like a Friday-night high school football game is another good reason to hold a slumber party. - Pizza is a staple at slumber parties. Order out or have guests make their own. Ice cream sundae bars can be set up for dessert. Teens also like appetizer foods, such as mozzarella sticks, potato skins and mini quiches. Finger foods are more appropriate than a sit-down meal.
Food also can be related to the party's theme; fruit smoothies for a spa party, chili cheese dip and finger sandwiches for a sports-related gathering or chocolate desserts for an anti-Valentine's Day slumber party contribute to a festive mood.
Breakfast the morning after, whether home-cooked pancakes and hot cocoa or store-bought bagels and juice, is appreciated by sleep-deprived partygoers. - Common slumber party activities include watching movies, listening to music, doing one another's hair, nails and makeup, playing truth or dare and other games and doing anything other than sleeping. If your teen's slumber party is themed, that can lead to more specific activities.
- While the host or hostess's bedroom is the most likely space, the number of guests and proximity to family members who do wish to get some sleep must be considered. A large family or living room is a good choice, and sleeping bags, blankets and pillows can be put on the floor for makeshift bedding. The location of the bathroom and kitchen also is a factor, though cold drinks and late-night snacks can be put in a portable cooler.
- Lay down your rules when planning the party with your teen. You might need to address such issues as alcohol, leaving the house or prank calls, so there are no misunderstandings or unpleasant situations during the party. Take a minute to reiterate your expectations once the guests have arrived, but emphasize that you want everyone to enjoy themselves. Expect some parents to inquire about your rules and the level of supervision during the party.
