How to Replace the Brake Lights in the Trunk Lid of a 1996 BMW 328i

    Coupe and Sedan Models

    • 1). Switch off the ignition of your BMW 328i and turn off the lights.

    • 2). Press the trunk release button, located below the dashboard and to the left of the steering wheel, to unlock the trunk.

    • 3). Open the trunk fully and locate the center brake light assembly. Access the bulb socket directly beneath the center brake light assembly.

    • 4). Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and pull it directly out of the light assembly.

    • 5). Pull the bulb directly out of the socket to remove it.

    • 6). Insert a new bulb into the socket and press until the base of the bulb securely fits into the socket. Be sure to wear a clean glove. The oils on your fingers will cause a bulb to fail prematurely.

    • 7). Insert the socket (with the bulb attached) into the center brake light assembly and twist it clockwise 1/4 turn.

    • 8). Press the brake pedal in the BMW 328i while someone else looks to verify that the center brake light works.

    • 2). Press the trunk release button, located below the dash to the left of the steering wheel, to unlock the trunk.

    • 3). Open the trunk fully and peel the trunk lid carpet out so that you have access to the center brake light assembly. Start at the edge of the trunk lid and simply pull the carpet out to remove it; pull harder to release the plastic fastener clips.

    • 4). Disconnect the electrical connectors, then remove the four retaining nuts securing the center brake light assembly to the trunk.

    • 5). Push the center brake light assembly out through the trunk.

    • 6). Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and pull it directly out of the light assembly.
