- 1). High school football is big in many states, including Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio and California, and the schools with the best programs and winning traditions are very selective when it comes to their head coaches. In general, you'll need several years of coaching experience as an assistant on the high school level to gain consideration for a head coaching job. Favored candidates are usually assistant coaches currently on staff who've demonstrated great teaching, organizational and leadership skills.
- 2). A standout college player, particularly from a large and well known university, with strong leadership skills will usually receive strong consideration when applying for a high school head coaching position. College teams are well organized and usually led by coaches with years of experience. A former player may be asked to serve as an assistant for a short period to gain coaching experience, but the college experience will eventually serve as an advantage.
- 3). While there is usually fierce competition for head coaching jobs at many of the successful high school football programs throughout the country, there are more, and easier, opportunities to coach at smaller or even poor schools. In some school districts, coaching vacancies are filled by teachers with little football experience.
