If you are being made redundant and looking to start a new business, you are likely to have more potential distractions than other new business owners so the art of maintaining focus is a crucial skill to learn.
Here are my essential P's for maintaining focus: Plan - Have a plan of what you want to achieve this year, this quarter, this month, this week and today.
Prioritise - Ask yourself each day, if I had only one thing I needed to achieve today, what would it be? Do that one thing, then ask yourself the question again before you move on to something else.
Pal - Have a pal, a supporter, mentor, coach or family member, who will hold you accountable and check you have done what you say you are going to do.
Play - Have some 'play' or rest time each day.
Doing something different now and again will give your brain a rest from your main task and allow you to settle back down again, refreshed and raring to go again.
Picture - have a picture, or vision, of what you are trying to achieve.
This can be your vision for your business but it can also be the vision of what you want your life to be like as and when you make a success of your business.
Creating a vision of where you want to get to in 1, 2 or 3 years time will help maintain your focus on what you need to do today.
For a business vision, this can be a mission statement or business plan.
For your life, it could be a number of things: - A future journal entry.
Write yourself a journal entry for a day when you can spend your time having the perfect day.
- A vision board - made up of photographs of your own or cut from magazines.
- A 'vision video', which you can create easily and free from one of the online tools - a good one is animoto.

A key element to business success is maintaining focus - don't forget the five P's when working on your business.
