- The first thing to do is disconnect the drain rod, the horizontal rod extending from the back of the drain under your sink. Just remove the clip and unscrew the nut in the base of drain. To start, slide the metal clip off the drain plug rod and slide the drain plug rod off the lifting rod, which is the vertical rod attached to the faucet you pull on to operate the drain. Unscrew the nut securing the drain plug rod to the base of the drain and pull the drain plug rod out of the drain.
- Unscrew the drain nut securing the drain to the sink basin. The nut is underneath the sink on the drainpipe. Follow the drainpipe up to the sink until you find the hexagonal nut. It's right beneath the rubber compression washer flush with the bottom of the sink. Unscrew this with a large pipe wrench or an adjustable wrench that fits the nut.
- Once the nut is loosened, disconnect the drain. You can do this before you loosen the drain nut if you like. The order of steps is not important. Unscrew the lock nut on top of the P-trap with a wrench until it is loose. The drainpipe simply slides into the P-trap, so once the locknut is loose, you can pull out the drainpipe. Don't rotate the P-trap unless you have a bucket ready. The P-trap is full of water, even when the water is turned off.
- Once the large nut is loosened far enough, the drain plug will slide up into the sink basin. The top rim of the drain screws into the bottom drainpipe unit. This is how the drain installs in the sink. Simply turn the drain plug rim by hand or use a wrench to unscrew it. Pull the drain plug out of the sink. Pull the drainpipe through the bottom of the sink to remove this part, if necessary.
