Chairs contain four leg spindles, which are generally 17 inches in length. The four spindles are matching in details and carving, which makes them more complex when it comes to turning them on a wood lathe. They can be carved in pairs, simply by adding a section of wood which measures 34 inches, and cutting it in half to create two legs. - Stairs contain one to two spindles per step. Spindles on stairs generally support hand rails, which make it safer and easier for individuals to move up and down the stairs. Stair spindles, also referred to as balusters, are generally 26 inches in length, topped with a 4-inch thick hand railing to create an overall height of 30 inches.
- Tables generally rest upon four to six identical spindles, known as legs. Table legs are between 28 inches and 29 inches long, depending on the thickness of the table top, which combine to create a 30-inch height. Table spindles are generally 3 inches to 6 inches in diameter, which allows an equal transfer of weight onto the legs from the table top and items placed upon the table.

Lamps are a common household item which range from 6 inches in height to several feet. Solid wood spindles can be carved decoratively to create a lamp base which will make a great addition to any room. Unlike most other spindle projects, lamp spindles do not have to be duplicated and each lamp can create an individual statement of its own. The interior of the spindle must be cleared, at least 1/4-inch in diameter, to allow cables to pass through to power the lamp.
