- 1). Open the hood of your Thunderbird, prop it up with the hood support and locate the battery; it is near the front of the vehicle. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the negative terminal. This will prevent the new airbag from deploying during installation.
- 2). Go inside your car and locate the fuse panel on the lower portion of the dash. Open the fuse panel and examine the diagram to identify the airbag fuse. Pull out the fuse to completely deactivate the airbag system for safety.
- 3). Unscrew and remove the panels of your steering column. You will see the old airbag; it is bolted behind the steering wheel. Unscrew those bolts and pull out the bag. Inside the column, the airbags wires are connected to the vehicle's wiring harness. Unplug the airbag wires from the harness and remove the old airbag.
- 4). Plug the wires of the new airbag into the wiring harness and screw the harness in place behind the steering wheel. Replace the steering column panels and fasten them down tightly using the screwdriver.
- 5). Open the glove box and unhook the straps from each side to remove the door. Unscrew the glove box and pull it out of the dash to access the passenger airbag. Unscrew the old airbag and pull it out. Unplug it from its wiring harness and remove it completely.
- 6). Plug the wires of the new airbag into the electrical harness. Then, push the airbag gently into the dash. Screw it in place. Insert the glove box back into the dash cavity and screw it in tightly. Reattach the straps of the glove box door and close the door.
- 7). Open the fuse panel and reinstall the airbag fuse. Go to the car's battery and reconnect the negative cable to the negative battery terminal.
