- ODF files may describe any variety of OpenDocument file, from text to spreadsheets to images. Often, the file extension is changed for easy identification of data types: files with the extension .odt contain text, .ods files store spreadsheets, .odp files store presentations, and .odg files store graphical images. Note that the .odf extenstion may also refer to an OpenDocument file containing mathematical formulae, rather than a generic OpenOffice file.
- OpenOffice documents are a variety of XML file, a nearly universal file format for storing text and similar data. These XML roots make it easier for OpenDocument files to transfer between multiple applications and uses.
- Besides OpenOffice, many other productivity software suites can open and edit OpenDocument files, even if they do not produce them by default. These include newer versions of Microsoft Office, Microsoft WordPad, Google Docs and StarOffice.
