- 1). Before you can transfer your balance, you need to apply for a new credit card. When applying for the card, make sure it offers zero interest for the first several months. Some may even last up to 18 months. You also need to check what the credit limit is on the potential card. It may be a good idea to leave a few hundred dollars available on the card in case of an emergency.
- 2). Activate the card once you receive it in the mail. You can do this using the phone number or website listed on the card. Once you have finished activating the card and you are asked if you want to transfer the balance of a current card to the new card, choose "Yes."
- 3). Type in (or read out, if activating over the phone) the first credit card's information. This includes the 16-digit number on the front, the expiration date and the CVC number located on the back of the card or the four digits found on the front of American Express cards. If you are not able to transfer the entire amount to the new card, make sure to pay off the remainder of the original card (as it has an interest rate and the new card remains at zero for the first six to eighteen months).
- 4). Submit the information. Once the new credit card company receives the transfer request, the money from the first credit card will be transferred to the new card with the zero interest rate.
