- 1). Open the Excel file that contains the date you want to change.
- 2). Right-click on the cell where the date is located. Choose "Format Cells" from the pop-up menu. The "Format Cells" window will appear on your screen.
- 3). Click the "Date" category on the left side of the window. Look through the list of date format options on the right side until you find one that includes the year and matches your desired date style. There are options for both the four-digit year and the two-digit year.
- 4). Select "Custom" from the list on the left side of the window if none of the available date options suited your needs. Select one of the additional date options listed here, or place the cursor into the "Type" box to create your own. In this box "yy" stands for the two-digit year, and "yyyy" stands for the four-digit year. Use "m" and "d" to signify the rest of the date and add in almost any other symbol, like brackets or a plus sign, to create a truly custom look.
- 5). Click "OK" when you are done choosing or creating your date format. You will see the selected cell change to include the year.
