Most people find it difficult to differentiate good from evil.
People who live deceptively are sometimes applauded and decorated in public places for doing a "good" job.
In both public and civil service, we see people who act in ways that do not really tell others about themselves.
In the public and civil service, numerous scandals involving fake academics and corrupt politicians, are the order of the day.
Nigeria once had a leader in the National Assembly who brandished fake academic qualifications, ever since, cases of such magnitude have never stopped to surface, even though they were smartly covered up.
People in the lower ranks of the public service may actually engage in such unholy acts, but it sounds unthinkable for persons in line of succession to any country's Presidency, to be caught in deceptive acts.
In Nigeria, the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives is not only revered, it is sacrosanct.
In succession to the Nigerian Presidency, after the President of the Senate and Vice President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives is the third in line.
Accordingly, the National Assembly which is the nation's law-making body is to lead by example.
Its leaders, who are highly respected, both nationally and internationally, even though they are chosen in an indirect election conducted within the House by its members, are to be the torch-bearers of the nation.
They are the light that lightens the dark places of the country.
They are the salt that brings out the taste of the Nigerian nation, but renders the nation insipid when caught in unholy acts.
Living in a world that is in opposition to the will of God, it should not surprise us to hear of deceptive tendencies in both high and low places.
The Bible tells us that the activities of evil men and impostors will always get to the highest peak as they keep deceiving people and the same time being deceived (2 Timothy 3:13).
They will continuously make others to believe falsehood as truth and accept wrong as right.
However, as God's children, our defense against deception remains the Word of God, because "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
The Word of God helps us to set right what is wrong, and to make known what is right.
It also makes us aware of these wrongs, prompts us and teaches us to do what is right.
When we read and apply God's Word, we are not only thoroughly equipped for good work which makes us people of integrity, but it helps us walk out of a deceptive life.
We detect errors easily as we read God's Word, and it helps us to practice what is right with godly fear.
When you are not in God, deception flows through you like water finds its tributaries, but the moment you surrender to Him, you are lifted!
