- 1). Wait until the late summer to perform the first pruning, typically around Labor day in most locations.
- 2). Identify any stems that are brown or yellow, meaning they are dead, or stems that only have one or two leaves which will soon die. Follow each of these stems back to the center base of the geranium and cut them off using hand pruners.
- 3). Grasp one of the outer stems of the scented geranium and look at where it emerges from the soil. Trace it upward until you have passed three leaves. Cut the stem off 1/4 inch above the third leaf with the hand pruners.
- 4). Cut all of the remaining stems off at the same height as the first using pruning shears to speed the process. Use the first cut stem as a guide as you cut across the geranium plant.
- 5). Collect all of the cut portions, raking them up if needed, and throw them into a compost area.
- 6). Wait until late November and prune the scented geranium a second time to shape up the tips. Use the pruning shears to cut off approximately 1/2 to 1 inch from each stem, forming the clump into a slight mound shape.
