- 1). Open PowerPoint. To put backgrounds on an existing presentation, click the "File" tab. Click "Open." Click "Browse." Navigate to the slideshow and double-click it, which opens with the first slide in the main window and the rest of the slides running down the slide deck on the left side of the screen.
- 2). Click the "Design" tab at the top of the screen. Click the "Background Styles" button on the right side of the toolbar/ribbon below the tab. Click "Format Background" to open the "Format Background" window.
- 3). Click the "Color" button on the "Fill" window and choose one of the small colored squares to serve as the slide's background color. The background color immediately changes for the single selected slide. Click the "Close" button to close the "Format Background" window and get back to the slide or the "Apply to All" button to change the background color of all the slides in the presentation.
- 4). Select the "Gradient fill" button on the "Format Background" window to add designs such as rainbows, gradients and whorls to the slide background, with options to choose the colors and direction of the background design.
- 5). Click the "Picture or texture fill" button. Click the "File" button. Navigate to a photo or image to use for the background of the slide and double-click it.
- 6). Click the "Close" button to close the "Format Background" window and get back to the slide or the "Apply to All" button to change the background color of all the slides in the presentation. The slides now have backgrounds.
