How to Replace the Motor in Your Clothes Dryer

    • 1). Unplug the electrical cord of the dryer from the electrical outlet before attempting to replace the motor.

    • 2). Pull open the dryer door and locate the screws underneath the top lip of the dryer, unfastening them with a screwdriver and setting the screws in a safe place.

    • 3). Flip the top lid back so it is resting against the wall on the rear hinges and locate the screws inside the front panel of the dryer near the top, unfastening them with a screwdriver.

    • 4). Lift the front panel off the metal clips at the bottom of the dryer cabinet and tilt the panel away from the dryer, unplugging the door switch connector on the back of the panel by hand and setting the panel out of the way.

    • 5). Locate the idler arm at the bottom of the cabinet near the motor, moving the arm back to relieve the tension on the belt and take the belt off the idler arm and motor pulleys as well as from around the drum, setting the belt aside.

    • 6). Lift the drum out of the cabinet by placing one hand on the top front of the drum and the other hand on the bottom in the back, lifting it out of the slot in the rear panel and setting the drum out of the way.

    • 7). Unplug the electrical wiring harness from the motor, detaching the nut with a nut driver and use a socket wrench to unfasten the bolts holding the motor onto the motor bracket in the dryer cabinet.

    • 8). Position the new motor in the motor bracket, securing it with bolts and attach the electrical wiring harness to the motor with a nut driver.

    • 9). Slide the dryer drum back into the slot in the rear panel and place the belt around the drum, looping it over the idler arm pulley and around the motor pulley.
