- 1). Accept that you cannot qualify for a prime credit card from an institution like Chase, Citi, Bank of America or U.S. Bank at this point. These banks are all considered prime and will want customers with credit scores above 700.
- 2). Look at different databases that contain information on credit cards and credit scores. These databases will tell you the types of credit cards for which people with scores similar to yours are qualifying. Some of the better-known credit cards for people with low credit scores are from Orchard Bank, First Premier Bank and Credit One.
- 3). Understand that you may have to get a credit card with an annual fee. Most companies offering cards to people with credit scores below 600 charge an annual fee. Thus, examine the terms and conditions of the different cards and apply for the ones with the lowest annual fees.
- 4). Don't be surprised if the card also has a high APR. People with low credit scores will simply not get zero percent interest cards. Just remember to keep a low balance and pay it in full monthly. This way you don't have to worry about the APR but are also improving your credit and working your way to a credit score above 600. Once that happens, you will receive offers for credit cards offering better terms.
