- The requirements, training and rules to drive a motorcycle vary from state to state. Others will require a license. A driver must be at least 16 years old, pass the motorcycle knowledge test, a street sign test, and a vision test in order to obtain this permit. There are limitations to the times a permit-holder can operate and a permit-holder can only ride a motorcycle by hisself.
- The motorcycle skills test required by some states may be waived if the applicant already has a passenger vehicle or other license. A full motorcycle license instead of a permit is given when a driver passes the motorcycle skills test and is 18 years or older. According to the Test Questions and Answers website, states such as Texas may require an applicant under 18 years old to complete an official Motorcycle Safety Course approved by the respective state's Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
- An applicant must provide his Department of Motor Vehicles or Secretary of State office with at least two forms of ID (one of them ideally a driving license) and a parental consent form if the applicant is under 18. Proof of a Social Security number may also be required. States may issue licenses through separate departments or offices within the state.
