- Saturn introduced the Ion sedan and coupe in 2003. As Saturn's entry-level vehicle, the Ion replaced the S-series cars, which debuted with the Saturn brand in the early 1990s. In 2007, the Ion was replaced by the Astra hatchback, but the Ion lived on as one of Saturn's fuel-efficient entry-level cars. The 2007 Ion 3 was part of a three-model lineup, joined by the Ion 2 and the Redline. The Ion 3 came in sedan and Quad coupe variants.
- The Ion 3 came with a 145-horsepower, 2.2-liter, inline four-cylinder engine. With an 3.4-inch bore, 3.7-inch stroke and 10:1 compression ratio, the engine reaches maximum horsepower at 5,600 rpm. Maximum torque of 150 pound-feet is achieved at 4,200 rpm. The 2007 Ion 3 gets about 23 miles per gallon in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, and it has a 13-gallon fuel tank.
- The Ion 3 sedan and Quad coupe came with a five-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Overdrive allows the engine to get greater fuel efficiency and reduce engine wear. A four-speed automatic transmission also is available. The 2007 Ion 3 is a front-wheel-drive car with front disc and rear drum brakes as well as front independent suspension.
- The Ion 3 Quad coupe seats up to four people with front and rear bucket seats. The Ion 3 four-door sedan seats up to five with front bucket and rear bench seats. Cloth seat trim came standard, and leather seats are available. Power locks, power exterior mirrors and speed-sensitive volume control came with the 2007 Ion 3. Safety features include four-wheel anti-lock brakes and driver-side and passenger-side front-impact airbags.
