How to Get Rid of Grass Around a Chainlink Fence

    • 1). Pull as much of the grass as you can from the area around the chainlink fence by hand. Once you’ve pulled the grass, use a spade to dig into and chop up the soil at the base of the fence to break the roots of the grass.

    • 2). Lay a 3- to 4-inch layer of mulch at the base of the fence to prevent the grass from growing back. Keep the mulch ½-inch to ¾-inch away from the fence itself to prevent the mulch from creating the same issues as the grass. Alternately, lay black plastic, such as cut trash bags, over the area where you removed the grass to prevent sunlight and water from getting in and stopping the development of new grass.

    • 3). Fill a spray bottle with undiluted white vinegar. Spray the grass around the bottom of the chainlink fence with the vinegar to kill it. Alternately, spray the grass around the base of the fence with herbicide.
